Chapter 27

Grey Mount Spaceport

Grey Mount City, Grinas

18 August 2607

“Get down,” Fischer shouted, pushing Marks and his wife down behind one of the only remaining aircabs still parked along the roadway in front of the spaceport. The girl screamed, and Marks pulled her to the ground with them.

Eliwood rounded the front of the cab and stopped with her hands on her knees. “Need to keep moving.”

“Yeah,” Fischer said. “I know.”

Screams and shouts continued to rip through the air around them as people spread out through the stalled traffic. Angry drivers shouted at the fleeing crowds without realizing the danger they were in. People punched and kicked cars that tried to cut them off.

Movement near the spaceport’s entrance caught Fischer’s attention: a group of uniformed security guards spilling out of the sliding glass doors. Three men and two women, dressed in dark blue utilities and gun belts, shouted for people to clear out and get down. Fischer couldn’t tell if they knew where the threat was coming from or not, but they clearly didn’t have any idea what they were up against. Their weapons were still holstered on their hips.

“We need to stop them,” Fischer said, stepping around Eliwood. “No! Stop!”

He might have been mute for all the good his warning did. The guard at the head of the group, a short woman with long black hair, took the first round, the impact spinning her like a top. She hit the ground before the rest of them had even realized what had happened.

“Son of a bitch,” Fischer growled through clenched teeth.

Two Elites had made it past the flyer but didn’t have a shot on Sheridan. They’d left him for their comrades and were pressing on for Fischer and his group. They were outside Fischer’s range, but he knew he had to do something. He leaned over the aircab’s roof and fired. All but one of his shots missed. The Elite he’d hit stumbled sideways but didn’t fall. He brought his rifle up.

“Get down!” Fischer shouted, ducking down.

“Give me a gun!” Davis shouted.

“No, get out of here!” Fischer shouted back. “Get across the road!”

The aircab’s windshield exploded in a shower of blinking shards of glass and shook with the impact of several rounds slamming into the far side. Fischer covered his head with his arms, flinching as multiple impacts shook the vehicle.

“Come on!” Marks yelled.

Fischer opened his eyes to see the man pulling his wife and daughter after him, running for a line of cars ten meters away. Davis was behind them, shielding the family as they retreated.

Fischer stood, found a target and fired, unloading the entire magazine. Beside him, Eliwood did the same, then ejected the empty with one hand while reaching for another with the other. To his left, the security guards were pulling their downed comrade to safety, the woman’s body lifeless and limp.

We’re not going to make it, Fischer told himself.

He glanced back at Davis and her brother. They’d reached the first gravcar and were starting to weave through the traffic.
